SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The Behavioral Support Specialist (BSS) is responsible for writing the Behavior Strategies Guide (BSG) (i.e. behavior plan) and ensuring its proper implementation by the family and other members of the Individualized Family Support Plan team.

BSS must have direct or educational (e.g. practicum, student teaching, or similar hands-on) experience in the treatment of children (preferably ages one-to-five) with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), or with significant impairments in communicating and relating, and/or social-emotional-behavioral functioning. The amount of experience required for each degree level is specified below. Exceptions can be considered on a case-by-case basis.

This position is a Part-Time, hourly position.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Licensed Behavioral Analyst (LBA) or Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA); requires no additional experience, or
  • Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA); requires a min. of 6 month experience, or
  • Certification in the Developmental, Individualized and Relationship-based (DIR) Floortime model, A or C program level; required no additional experience, or
  • Licensed in Psychology, psychiatric nursing, social work, marriage/family therapy, speech language pathology, occupational therapy or special education; requires 1 year of experience, or
  • Doctoral student in psychology, psychiatric nursing, social work, marriage/family therapy, speech language pathology, occupational therapy, special education, or another related field; Third and fourth year students require a minimum 18 months experience. First and second year student require 2 years experience, or
  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work, marriage/family therapy, speech language pathology, occupational therapy, special education, or another related field; requires a minimum of 18 months experience, or
  • Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, social work, marriage/family therapy, speech language pathology, occupational therapy, special education, or another related field; requires a minimum of 3 years’ experience. Before being permitted to work independently, a BA level BSS must engage in at least 10 hours of combination of shadowing and being shadowed by a BSS with early intervention (EI) experience.

TRAINING AND SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS

  • Prior to beginning work with and EI child/family, the BSS must successfully complete formal training through the provider. The training must include information that will prepare the BSS to generate developmentally appropriate BSGs that link directly with a child’s IFSP. The BSS must also attend training provided by the EIS at the first available training session.
  • The BSS is required to attend supervision monthly.

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Current TB clearance
  • First Aid and CPR training
  • Criminal history check
  • APS and/or CPS checks

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Strong clinical skills and experience demonstrating excellence in problem-solving, collaboration and clinical competencies in providing services to children with disabilities, child development and their families.
  • Prior experience working with children with severe social, communication and behavioral deficits.
  • Able to lead and direct children in various environments, such as schools, homes and community
  • Good communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Able to give and receive instruction or direction to/from others.
  • Able to respond effectively to the varied needs of the children, families, EI staff and other multidisciplinary team members.
  • Must be able to drive throughout the island of Oahu.
  • Personal qualities of warmth, acceptance, sound judgment, emotional stability, and reliability. Must demonstrate courtesy, respect and politeness to staff and DOH personnel.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • This position is subject to an annual criminal background investigation and continued employment is contingent on a record clear of convictions.
  • This position requires certification of an annual TB examination.
  • This position requires CPR/First Aid certification on a bi-annual basis.
  • This position requires an APS and/or CPS check annually.
